FA UMBRO FIVES - 2nd June 2007

The MWSF Futsal Team was one of 12 women’s teams competing at the FA Umbro Fives Regional Finals at Powerleague Mill Hill for the chance to play at Wembley Stadium!

Coming 2nd in the group stages, MWSF didn’t make it through to the next round to contest a place at Wembley, but everyone really enjoyed the day despite the very very hot weather! It was the first UK competition the team had entered, proudly winning their first game 4-1! Here’s to many more....

FA WOMEN’S FUTSAL CUP 2007
6th, 7th & 8th July 2007

The MWSF Futsal team was proud to take part in the very first FA Women’s Futsal Cup in July accompanied by the BBC film crew for Desi DNA.  The three day tournament took place in the prestigious Ponds Forges Institute, Sheffield.

In the lead up to the tournament, not all was smooth. Preparing initially with a squad of 10, the team went down to 8 players just a few days before the tournament following family commitments and Bilkees Shivji jumping off a swivel chair consequently tearing a ligament in her big toe! (For those upcoming futsal players out there, please learn from Bilkees’ actions!      )

Putting aside our bumpy preparation, the final squad of 8 reached Sheffield early on Friday morning optimistic and excited about the competition ahead.

Participating in three gruelling days of competition, the MWSF Futsal team made it though to the semi finals of the plate before being knocked out.

Our team made a lasting impression at the tournament, with the organisers and referees admiring our spirit and behaviour throughout leading to the team not only being invited to play a friendly match against the referees, but also in being presented with the tournament Fair Play award at a special ceremony held in the English Institute of Sport.

And to make the tournament even more memorable, we had the great privilege of touching and having our photo taken with THE FA cup (see picture above!)
