Saturday April 24th, MWSF Cobras took on Brunel University for the second time. A slow start for the Cobra’s saw them go down 1-0 within seconds of kick off. Taking a while to get their feet, the team were down 3-0 before a rebounded strike by Ayesha Abdeen started off their tally. Brunel continued to attack and a noticeably unsteady Cobra’s conceded a further five times, however strikes by Sana Tirmizi and Rimla Akhtar along with a second goal by Ayesha led the Cobra’s into half time with 4 goals to their name.

The second half saw a new more confident Cobra’s enter the pitch. Holding their formation well in defence with 100% effort from each player the attack of Brunel was slowed down. More importantly the counterattacking by the Cobra’s, whilst not always perfect, showed the potential of the team. A few moments of magic, words of wisdom from coach Ciara Allan, and three more goals from Ayesha Abdeen helped the Cobra’s reach a goal tally of 7. The highest ever achieved by the team! Occasional lapses in concentration enabled Brunel to add to their goal tally with the final score ending 13-7 to Brunel, however the Cobra’s should stand tall and be proud of their achievement.

On Saturday 23rd January, the newly named MWSF Cobras played their debut match against Brunel University since reforming in October 2009. For many team members this was their first experience of futsal in all its glory!

A difficult match for the Cobras, the team trailed the force of Brunel for most of the game. Taking a while to find their feet in the first half, the team was down 3-0 before a strike from Sana Tirmizi raised cheers of joy and excitement from the bench. With increased confidence, optimism and a series of outstanding saves from goalkeeper, Mahdieh Pourali, the Cobras fought on. Two goals from Ayesha Abdeen in the second half increased the tally for the MWSF to three, but the growing might of Brunel was too much for the inexperienced side. With heads held high the match ended 13-3 to Brunel. Many a lesson was learnt with MWSF Cobras coach, Ciara Allan commenting “As a first game I think there’s a lot we can learn from our opponents, it should be seen as a learning curve and not a loss. The finally newly named squad can and hopefully will, continue to train and together we will work towards increasing our goal tally in future games.”

The Cobras next game is on February 20th against the Soul Sisters at Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls, watch this space for more info!

The Muslim Women’s Sport Foundation organised their first tournament of the year which was kindly hosted by Elite Youth at the Osmani Youth Centre sports hall in east London. MWSF Ravens played alongside Elite Youth, Hayaa Fitness and Enfield Phoenix. Enfield Phoenix were the team to beat and played a tough game finishing first. In second place was our host Elite Youth who gave Enfield a good run and gave us an exciting final. In third place were our very own Ravens who played four solid games and improved in skill as well as confidence over the three games. In fourth place was a late entry Hayaa Fitness who made some of the best shots of the tournament!

If you want to play in the next tournament, come on down to training!!! Check out the gallery for more pictures.

Saturday 31st October saw the launch of the Muslim Women’s Sport Foundation’s latest project to increase female participation in sport. The Born To Succeed (B2S) launch was held through a futsal festival to highlight the importance of the three year sporting project, which will be based in Acton, LB Ealing.

Funded by the Football Foundation, B2S aims to increase the participation of black, minority and ethnic women in sport. The well attended event at Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls, Queen’s Drive, Acton included a skills session led by Alex Scott, England Women’s Football International. Ms Scott also answered questions in an informal Q&A with girls who were aged between 16-40.

Other attendees included Charlotte Edwards, Women and Girls’ Development Officer from Middlesex County FA, John Mann MP and the Mayor Of Ealing, Councillor Barbara Yerolemou. Ms Yerolemou presented a check for £235,972 from the Football Foundation to MWSF representatives.

The B2S project began in August 2009 and covers four main areas:
- Regular structured training sessions in futsal and basketball in an all female environment including leagues and tournaments
- School outreach programme
- Support individuals to become qualifies coaches and referees
- Research into Muslim women’s participation in sport

Through providing the facilities and support that take into consideration the religious and cultural sensitivities of black, minority and ethnic women, the main benefits of the project will be:
- Increased player pathways to higher level competition
- The promotion of healthy living through increased activity levels – tackling obesity and enhancing mental health
- A sound foundation and lasting role models for future generations of black, minority and ethnic women
- The promotion of cohesion between Muslim and non-Muslim communities thereby tackling inequalities

Alex Scott, England Women’s International said: “ The MWSF sessions are a great achievement, their attendance every week shows that there needs to be more thing like this including female only sessions. The whole organisation is a great success.”

John Mann MP stated “The MWSF is a unique organisation and are really leading the way forward. They are an example to other organisations in what they are doing. The ladies are filled with enthusiasm and are supported across the community”.

The Mayor of Ealing, Barbara Yerolemou commented: “I am delighted to see that this project is based in Ealing. I am sure that this will enable many women to take part in sports which they may not have thought of before and to be role models and encourage many women to see their potential.”
